When asked how he prepared his team for an opponent, Chicago Bears legendary owner and football coach George Halas stated, "Find out what the other team wants to do. Then take it away from them." Keep this in mind when dissecting the game video of your next opponent's offense.

- Diagram each formation used by the offense
- Diagram each play.
- Track the number of times each play is run, and out of which formation.
- Track plays by down and distance, left/right hash mark or middle of the field, and field position.
Find the Answers to These Questions
- Does the offense run the same plays to the strong and weak side?
- When substituting players, are specific plays run?
- What is the Run/Pass ratio on first down?
- Does the fullback provide the 'key' to the direction of the play?
- Do the guards provide the 'key' to the direction of the play?
- Does the offense run the same plays out of different formations?
- What are the trick/gadget plays? Is there a 'set-up' play for them?
- If an option team, does the quarterback 'read' the defense, or is the pitch/handoff predetermined?
Player Focus
- Who is the best player?
- Who is the weakest player on the line? (Blitz that player's gap, e.g)
- Does any lineman tip the play by forward lean on a run, or setting on heels when a pass?
- Is the quarterback a better pocket passer, or does he like to roll out?
- When rolling out, which direction is more comfortable for the quarterback?
- Does the running back 'give' the play away when he is not getting the ball?
- Is the tight end a good blocker?
- Are the receivers physical blockers?
Situation Specifics
- Favorite short yardage/goal line plays?
- Run or pass more on second and long?
- Is QB under center or in Shotgun on short yardage situations?
- Who is the 'go to' player when facing a critical play?
Game Plan Hints
- Focus on top five plays the offense likes to run. Practice actual situations (fullback dive on goal line, e.g.).
- Take away the offense's best plays and force the opposing coaches to change their game plan.
