Tips on Repairing & Fading Age Spots

    • Age spots, sometimes referred to as liver spots, are one of the most common telltale signs of aging. Age spots are the result of sun damage and appear as black, brown or gray spots. Age spots show up on areas of your skin that are exposed to the sun. You can lessen the appearance of age spots with home remedies, store-bought products and the help of a dermatologist.

    Home Remedies

    • For a quick application, slice a lemon into rings and dab them over your age spots.lemon image by Maria Brzostowska from Fotolia.com

If you want to lighten your age spots without spending a lot of cash, you can use ingredients regularly found in the kitchen such as lemon, aloe vera, milk and yogurt. Squeeze a lemon and apply the juice to your age spots two times a day. After a couple of months, you should see results from this approach. The citric acid within the lemon juice helps to lighten up the spot. Aloe vera is also helpful in neutralizing the appearance of dark skin by making the age spot smoother. Milk products are a useful tool in fighting age spots and can be mixed with other ingredients to maximize effectiveness. Mix buttermilk, yogurt or milk with aloe vera and lemon juice. Apply the mixture to your face and allow it to try for about 10 minutes, then wash and moisturize.

    Over-the-counter Products

    • There are countless face creams on the market that claim to fade or entirely remove age spots. A key ingredient to look for when considering a cream that will fade age marks is retinol. Retinol is a high concentration of vitamin A and has been found to help fade age marks. This ingredient also helps reverse sun damage and wards against wrinkles. Some popular and inexpensive creams that include retinol are ROC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream and Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Tone Correcting Targeted Treatment. Oil of Olay offers products that are specialized in fading age spots and evening skin tone. Oil of Olay Total Effects Instant Smoothing Serum and Oil of Olay Pro-X Discoloration Fighting Concentrate are both designed to specifically fade age spots.

    Dermatologist Visit

    • If you want a quicker fix for your age spots, visit a dermatologist. A dermatologist can prescribe medication or treatments that are stronger than over-the-counter approaches, but these treatments can also cause temporary flaking, irritation and redness. There are a variety of bleaching creams available that are successful in fading even the most stubborn age spots. Laser resurfacing, chemical peels and intense pulsed light therapy are more expensive and effective options that will also fade age spots.
