How to Get Smells Out of a Pottery Barn Rug

    • 1). Set your rug outside overnight. The fresh air outdoors often can help the bad odors to disappear. Inspect the rug for any insects before bringing it back inside.

    • 2). Vacuum your rug. Imbedded dirt, food and other materials can often cause rugs to give off a bad smell. By removing the particles with a vacuum, you will more than likely eliminate the scent.

    • 3). Sprinkle baking soda on the rug and allow it to sit overnight or as long as possible--the longer the baking soda sits, the more time it has to absorb the odors. Vacuum the baking soda when you are ready to remove it from the rug. Empty your vacuum bag or canister often, as the baking soda will cause it to become heavy and full. Repeat the process if you still detect the odor, as it could take a few applications before the odor is completely removed.

    • 4). Pour equal parts distilled white vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Apply a light spray of the mixture to the rug. The combination should absorb the odor.
