Baraka Resaurant – Family Recipes, Sufi Heart

Atmosphere:

As spring begins in Buenos Aires the flowers bloom and cafes begin to set out their patio seating and open up terraces. Café sitting is like a sport in Buenos Aires, a very relaxed, slow, caffeine and chat fueled sport. Baraka, located in Palermo Soho, is an ideal spot for just such things. It has a row of tables on the each of its sidewalks, sunlit terrace, and large windows that flood the inside with light.

White and lavender paint, swirling flowers, mosaic lampshades, and couches loaded down with patterned pillows all make for a cozy and welcoming dining area.

Food:

Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, the menu includes breakfast, lunch, coffee, and dinner. They do not serve alcohol at Baraka, but they do have a long list of speciality tea, coffees, liquados (smoothies), and lemonades. The lemonade with ginger has a terrific tang to it.
Although they were downsized after recent renovations, the medialunas (crossants) are fresh baked, delicious and even come in wheat. You’ll also find pan integral (wheat bread) in a toast basket mix, which, along with a selection of dulce de leche, queso blanco, and jams, is large enough to share. Lunch and dinner options include fresh salads, stir-fry, and sandwiches. The lamb burger, served on bread, is thick, juicy, and well seasoned. It’s served with thick cut fingerling potatoes and a bizarrely sweet ketchup.

For a lighter option, the couscous and caramelized pumpkin salad is fresh and satisfying.

Service:

The service at Baraka is an anomaly in a city that’s known for its not-so-helpful waitstaff. The staff’s bright and colorful dress match their attitudes. This may be in part to the restaurant’s close affiliation with the Sufi religion, as evident by the books in their small library at the back, and the heading atop their specials blackboard – “Recetas de familia, Corazon sufi” – Family Recipes, Sufi Heart.
