Why Are iPods So User-Unfriendly?

    iPods

    • Some iPod users have complained that since an iPod can only run iTunes, and songs and videos must be purchased through iTunes, customers are locked in, and Apple has therefore engineered a monopoly on its products. Also, Apple products do not support Adobe Flash, meaning that the iPod Touch, which can browse the Internet, cannot run certain sites and content.

    iTunes

    • Some users have complained that iTunes software is overcomplicated, slow, rigid and prone to glitches. Many have called iTunes "bloated," remarking that it takes up an large amount of memory. There are alternatives to iTunes that can be used with an iPod, but these can be tricky to set up and may invalidate your warranty.

    Batteries

    • The batteries used in iPods are nonreplaceable. When the battery life is at an end, the entire player must be replaced, which can be expensive and inconvenient. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that the battery is designed to run out soon after the warranty does.

    Apple's Response

    • Apple has refuted most of these criticisms, saying that it makes every attempt to be user-friendly and is very concerned with customer satisfaction.
