Information on Controlling Wild Violets on a Lawn

    Identification

    • Wild violets grow low to the ground and bloom between April and June, depending on the cultivar. Most varieties have heart-shaped leaves and five petals. Flower colors are available in blue, white, yellow, purple and bi-color.

    Herbicide Considerations

    • Apply a broadleaf herbicide when wild violets are in bloom or in the early fall. A product that contains triclopyr is recommended. It typically takes numerous applications to control this weedy flower.

    Other Weed Control Considerations

    • Whether digging up or pulling out wild violets, completely removing the root system is imperative. Failure to do so results in re-growth. Pull violets when the soil is moist or wet. Digging them up with a small garden spade or sharp knife typically makes the task easier.
