- 1). Dig around the base of the sprinkler with a shovel, removing about eight inches of dirt and making enough room on the sides so that your hand can get around the base of the sprinkler.
- 2). Grab the base of the sprinkler with your hand and twist it counterclockwise. The sprinkler sits on a plastic riser with pipe threads, so it should unscrew easily.
- 3). Run the sprinklers for 30 seconds to flush dirt from the line.
- 4). Insert the new Rain Bird impact head on the plastic riser.
- 5). Twist the new sprinkler clockwise until it's tight on the riser.
- 6). Replace the dirt around the base of the sprinkler, and run the line for a few minutes to check the performance of the new sprinkler head. You may need to adjust the pattern of the sprinkler by turning a small set screw one way or the other on the base of the nozzle.
