- 1). Plant lobelias in a container made from wood, plastic or glazed terracotta. If your region has an unexpected freeze, clay pots can shatter or crack.
- 2). Stop fertilizing in the late summer months. New growth is the first to go in cold conditions. You should keep watering your lobelia plant through the fall, but stop after the first freeze.
- 3). Wrap your container with burlap sacks. Secure with tape, then wrap another layer with bubble wrap.
- 4). Spread 6 inches of mulch over your lobelia. You can use hay, straw, dried bark or leaves.
- 5). Move your container to a south-facing wall of your home so that it receives the warmth of the sun. Cluster your container plants together to protect them from the wind.
- 6). Remove the mulch and wrappings after the last frost and continue watering. Apply a fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks in the early spring.
