How to Connect a HP Computer to a LCD Television

    • 1). Shut down your HP computer.

    • 2). Check your HP computer and TV for the following ports: HDMI, DVI, VGA and S-Video. HDMI offers the highest quality, while S-Video is the worst (though also the cheapest). Check the Online Tech Tips website for illustrations of what the ports look like.

    • 3). Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the HDMI port on your computer and plug the other end into the HDMI input port on your LCD TV. HDMI is the highest quality option with full HD support, and the cable will transfer both audio and video from the laptop to the TV. If there is no HDMI port on the laptop, continue to Step 4.

    • 4). Connect a DVI to HDMI cable between the two units with the HDMI end plugged into the TV HDMI input port. The other end (DVI) will connect to your DVI computer port. Alternatively, you can purchase a DVI to HDMI converter and connect it to the DVI port on your computer. This allows you to use a HDMI cable to connect the TV and computer.

    • 5). Use a VGA cable to connect the two devices (both the computer and LCD TV will have a unique VGA port).

    • 6). Use an S-Video cable (connect the S-video cable ends to the TV input port and the computer output port). There are two different models: four pins and seven pins. The TV port will need to have the same pin type as the laptop port to work correctly.

    • 7). Connect an audio cable from the laptop to the TV if you used a non-HDMI cable (non-HDMI cables only transfer the video signal). There are two options: a Mini jack to RCA Audio cable or an RCA jack stereo cable. The two audio ends will plug into the red and white audio inputs on the back of your TV, while the other end will plug into either the computer headphone jack (Mini-jack cable) or the stereo jack on the audio card (RCA jack stereo cable).

    • 8). Turn on your TV and set it to the appropriate input setting. For instance, if you are using an HDMI cable that plugs into HDMI port No. 2, your LCD TV will need to be set at input "HDMI 2."

    • 9). Turn on your computer and let it load up. If it doesn't automatically detect the changed settings, you will need to set it up manually.
