The Best Bait for Trout Midday on a Pond

    Lures

    • Lures that spin are a good choice for midday trout fishing, as the movement of the lure will quickly attract the trout, even while they are on the bottom of the pond. The Mepps Aglia was recently chosen as the number one trout lure by readers of Field and Stream Magazine. Keep in mind that a smaller lure will be effective in catching smaller fish while a larger lure should be used to attract larger fish.

    Powerbait

    • Powerbait is another popular option when fishing for trout any time of the day, including midday. It has a distinct odor that is attractive to trout, as well as a variety of bright colors such as yellow, green, orange and pink.

    Insects

    • Insects are another very popular bait that is effective in catching trout, as insects are the usual food these fish look for. Bugs such as grasshoppers, crickets or May flies will attract the trout from their slumber along the bottom of a pond and even lure them out of a cave in the bank with their movement. You can purchase live bugs at most bait and tackle shops.

    Technique

    • Whatever bait you use, if you are fishing for trout during the midday hours it is a good idea to drop your bait a few feet above the place you might feel there may be trout and let it drift with the currents, allowing it to roll along on the bottom where the trout usually are. This will make your bait more enticing to the fish. Make sure to guide your bait around any obstacles such as logs or debris.
