Homemade Blonde Hair Dye
- You may not have to search any farther than your own backyard for the ingredients to make a hair rinse that will bring out your natural highlights. Gather 1 cup of marigold blossoms and 1 cup of chamomile blossoms. Chamomile naturally lightens and brightens hair. Remove as much of the stem as possible while leaving the bulbs intact. Then, in a large saucepan, bring two cups of apple cider vinegar to a rolling boil. Add one cup of chopped rhubarb root to the vinegar and boil for 10 minutes. Chemicals in the rhubarb bring out honey tones in the overall color. Reduce heat to a simmer and then stir in the flowers. Once the flowers have been incorporated, add 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Stir well to blend. Allow the mixture to simmer uncovered for an additional five minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool completely. Then pour the mixture through a coffee filter to remove any solid particles and transfer the resulting solution to a plastic bottle with a tight fitting lid. Add 1 tbsp. of honey and one tablespoon of clear 100 proof alcohol. These ingredients will promote natural shine. Shake well.
- To use your homemade hair rinse, measure 1 tbsp. of solution and combine it with 2 cups of water. After you have finished shampooing, apply the mixture to damp hair. Pour the hair rinse into a large mug or bowl and place the bristles of your hairbrush into the solution. Apply the wet brush to your hair, evenly distributing the misture to all areas of your scalp. Allow your hair to dry naturally for 30 to 45 minutes and then rinse with cool water. To obtain the best results, apply the rinse three times a week. Even with regular applications, it may take several weeks to see an obvious change in color.
- For a less complicated method of going blond, try a cup of tea with lemon. Using two of the key ingredients from the formula above, chamomile and lemon, you can make a simplified rinse and achieve similar, though less dramatic, results. Add one bag of chamomile tea to 2 cups of boiling water and allow the tea to steep for 15 minutes. Remove the bag and stir in 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Apply to wet hair, leaving the mixture in for 15 to 20 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. For the best results, use this rinse every time you wash your hair.
