How to Make Flannel Board Pieces

    • 1). Decide on the specific pieces that you will need to make. This is dependent on the story you are telling and/or the lesson objectives. For example, if you are telling the story of the Three Little Pigs, you will need three pigs, one wolf, a straw house, a wood house and a brick house. Additionally, you may need accent trees or other similar pieces.

    • 2). Create a template for the felt pieces. Use a pencil to draw your character, shape or design outline onto a thin piece of white paper. Cut out the drawing and tape it to the flannel/felt with a masking tape loop on the back.

    • 3). Trace the template onto the flannel/felt with a thin permanent marker. Draw around the outside of the taped piece to transfer the design. Remove the template and tape loop. Cut the design or shape from the flannel/felt along the edge of the marker line.

    • 4). Add clothing, texture or even fur to your flannel pieces with fabric scraps. Cut pretty patterned pieces, craft fur or fuzzy fleece to the desired size. Attach the fabric to the front of the flannel piece with fusible webbing. Cut a small piece of webbing. Place the webbing in between the flannel and fabric, with the fabric on the top. Iron to adhere the to two surfaces.

    • 5). Draw facial features, clothing items or other small details onto the front of the flannel piece using an assortment of colored permanent markers.
