How to Create a Painting without Using Paint
- 1). Create a painting using encaustic paint. Encaustic painting involves mixing heated beeswax to colored pigments. The paste is then applied to a canvas or any media you desire. Encaustic paints may come in a metal tin or as hot sticks. The paints contain no bleach or synthetic adulterants. These paints are available in solids. In order to liquify wax in tin cans, you have to place the tin on a hot plate. Hot sticks can be melted directly on your hot palette to create a puddle of color for your brush or can be applied directly on a heated substrate. Hot sticks glide just like lipstick and create vibrant colors.
- 2). Create art paintings with pigment sticks. Pigment sticks are wax mixed with oil paint. Oil paint is drying oil mixed with color pigments. These pigment sticks dry to a durable film and requires odorless mineral spirits to help blend colors. You can create a painting with a clayboard, stretch canvas, brushes and a panel. The pigment sticks allow you to paint with a continuous line and texture. You don't have to reload a brush. Adding multiple colors is easy and not messy. It's like a big crayon but made with oil.
- 3). Design your painting with pastel sticks or pastel pencils. Pastel is a painting medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder. Unlike a crayon, pastel sticks can blend colors easily. You can use pastels for lines, shading and color transitions. Pastels can be used for sketching, portraits and landscape drawings. The flow of color is smooth and rich in pigment.
- 4). Create fine details and distinct colors using egg tempera. All tempera paints contain organic compounds and are safe to use. However, they will spoil after a period of time. Egg tempera is made out of pigment mixed with egg yolk and water solvent.
