Planting the Seeds of Greatness

February is not only the month for love but also a little known National Celebration called Plant the Seeds of Greatness.
February is also the month when many gardeners, including myself, will start their seeds.
Starting seeds at home can be an enjoyable experience for all ages.
Kids will enjoy watching the miracles of life germinating before their eyes.
Adults, on the other hand, will take pleasure in the fact that they are saving money along with providing food security for their family.
Planting seed at home gives the gardener the opportunity to grow truly hyperlocal plant material while also providing a source of plant material that can not be found in local nurseries, feed and seeds or catchall home improvement centers.
Believe it on not, starting plants from seed is not a difficult process nor does it take any type of special equipment.
If done correctly, Mother Nature will take the biological reins and start the process with limited human interaction.
But before one jumps on the seed starting flat, one must first prepare for the process.
This process is described in the Seed Propagation 10 Commandments.
The first commandment is to plan before you plant.
Many gardeners plant a whole pack of seeds and end up with more seedlings then they had planned.
The second commandment the gardener needs to follow is the mantra of "Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
" Many gardeners have walked down the garden path and ignored this simple sign along the way.
In doing so, the garden gods have taken their toll by causing low germination rates.
The third commandment is to always remember that not all seeds are the same and in doing so some seeds need special treatment.
The fourth commandment to follow is thou shall understand ones seeds.
This keeps the gardener on the garden path and prevents one from planting the incorrect seed for season.
The fifth commandment covers an area that many gardeners ignore and that is their microclimate.
While the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map say it is so, it is always better to know ones garden space like the back of ones shove.
The sixth commandment covers the fact that one should share their gardening knowledge with other gardeners.
Today, we are in a situation where gardening knowledge is lacking and many individuals are in search of the knowledge that their grandparents and great-grandparents possessed.
The seventh commandment that every gardener should follow is thou shall not utilize garden soil to plant seeds indoors.
The eight commandment states that one should only water the soil and not the leaves, many gardeners have learned a hard and costly lesson when this commandment is ignored.
The ninth commandment encourages gardeners to properly prepare their seedlings for garden placement.
The last commandment is the one that is the hardest for many gardeners to follow and that is thou shall count before one plants.
While some may think the term counting is talking about seeds, it is not instead it is referring to the counting of the weeks prior to ones local frost-free day.
Starting ones garden from seed is a very rewarding experience.
Following the seed propagator's 10 commandments will help even the darkest brown thumb gardener become successful.
