How to Estimate a Brick Paver Patio
- 1). Mark the corners of the patio area. Measure the length and width of the planned patio. Multiply the two numbers to calculate the patio's area.
- 2). Calculate the number of bricks you will need based on the patio's area of the patio. The average brick paver is about 4-by-8 inches, so you would need about 45 pavers for every 10 square feet of patio.
- 3). Select edging bricks for the patio that complement the selected patio bricks. Note the length of the edging pieces. Add together the length of each side of the patio to determine the total length of you will need.
- 4). Calculate the amount of gravel you need for the base of the patio. The standard depth is 4 inches, or 0.333 feet. Multiply the patio area by the depth (0.333) to calculate the cubic feet of gravel. For instance, for a patio with an area of 100 square feet, you would multiply 100 by 0.333, for a total of 33.3 cubic feet of gravel.
- 5). Calculate the amount of sand you need to cover the gravel. You'll need about one-third of the amount you calculated for the gravel, so divide that number by 3 to determine the amount of sand. Using the above example, you would divide 33.3 by 3, for a total of 11.1 cubic feet of sand.
