How to Remove a Big Stump With Tricks

    • 1). Cut the tree low to the ground using a chain saw. Dig around the roots or stump until as much of the rooting system is exposed as possible. Sever the roots with an ax. Use a pry bar to lift one side of the stump. Wrap a chain around the bottom of the stump and connect it to a truck or tractor. Pull the stump out. You may have to do this from several angles before the stump begins to budge.

    • 2). Rent a stump grinder. The grinder has carbide teeth that grind the tree stump down to sawdust, which can be used for mulch. The grinder can penetrate 6 to 12 inches beneath the soil. Wear protective clothing and make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3). Pack wood around the stump and set it on fire. You will have to keep the fire going for a long time in order to burn through the stump. Check with local municipalities to ensure that burning is allowed and which days are suitable.
