Homemade Green Cleaning Solution
- Distilled vinegar is a great way to clean glass, aluminum, enamel, Formica and other kitchen or bathroom surfaces. Vinegar is a slightly acidic solution that will cut through grease, leaves no streaks and removes hard baked-on food. To make a vinegar-based cleanser, just mix one part vinegar with four parts water. Adding one-half part lemon, lime or orange will balance the harsh vinegar smell. Moreover, because citrus is also acidic, it will add to the cleaning power of the vinegar. Citrus-only cleanser should be avoided, though, because of the sugar content. Cleansers defeat their purpose when they leave a sticky residue that only needs cleaning again.
- Baking soda is a great way to scrub away hard-to-beat stains and built-up residue in any corner. What's more, baking soda and vinegar together will dissolve almost all organic (meaning food) grime in kitchens and other rooms. Use baking soda as you would any scrubbing cleanser, and rinse well with water. Wetting the baking soda will make a paste for scrubbing counter tops. Baking soda can get out tough baked-on food in pots and pans. Try using baking soda and vinegar in the oven instead of lye-based oven cleaners. Sprinkle baking soda over the area needing cleaning, then add vinegar. Just watch it go to work. Wipe away with warm water. Baking soda even makes a great tooth cleanser. Just sprinkle some in your hands and dab with a wet toothbrush. Brush your teeth normally and rinse. Your teeth and gums will feel fresher than ever.
- When you make your green cleaning solutions, put them in a cabinet away from the more caustic and industrial cleaners you may now have. As you make more green cleaners from different recipes, add them to your green cabinet and allow your industrial cabinet to get more sparse. When you have a cabinet full of green cleaners and an empty space where your old cleaners were, you then have a completely green home. Add to your homemade collection of cleaners store-bought items such as non-phosphate soaps, tree oil furniture polishes and sugar-free citrus dusting sprays.
