How to Make a Yard Fountain With Rocks

    • 1). Create a small holding area for the water. You can use an existing pond, create a new pond or place the fountain directly on top of the holding area so that no pond is visible. It must be deep enough so that the water can completely cover the submersible pump.

    • 2). Run the PVC pipe from the center of the pond or holding area to the center of where the fountain will be. Leave enough pipe at the fountain end so that it will reach to the top when the fountain is done. Attach a spray nozzle to the upper end of the pipe to control the flow of the water.

    • 3). Line the holding area with thick plastic, then lay smooth rocks and gravel on it until the plastic is not visible. Use larger rocks to line the outer edges of the holding area to give it a natural look. Place a submersible pump in the pond or other holding area.

    • 4). Build up the fountain, using larger rocks at the base and smaller ones higher up the structure. Any kind of rocks can be used. Those with sharp edges and flat sides will be easier to stack than smooth, rounded ones. Cement blocks can be used to support the internal structure of the fountain, though if the water goes into a pond with fish the blocks must be coated to prevent leeching of chemicals that will kill the fish. Use rocks to hide the pipes. Leave the nozzle uncovered.

    • 5). Place water-loving potted plants in crevices between the rocks in larger fountains. For smaller fountains, place plants near the fountain but not actually in it. Add finishing touches such as driftwood, figurines and colored stones. Plug in the pump.
