Bubbling Water Features
- In addition to adding aesthetic value to a home, a bubbling water feature can help contribute to a soothing, relaxing and Zen-like atmosphere. While homeowners almost exclusively use larger water features like waterfalls and fountains for enhancing landscapes and outdoor spaces, bubbling water features are often small enough to be beneficial for indoor or outdoor use. The type of bubbling water feature you use will depend on your personal tastes: while some bubbling features have natural or rustic appearances, others are more contemporary.
- As the BBC's Gardeners'World.com notes, a bubbling urn is a beneficial type of water feature for parents who are raising young children, as it has no large, easily-accessible reservoir of water that children could potentially drown in. Instead, a bubbling urn has a grate or grille that covers its water pump, as well as its water supply. A length of hose carries this water from the base of the urn--which is a tall, typically rounded vase or vessel--to the surface of the grille, allowing the water to bubble. People commonly cover these grilles with decorative rocks or stones. For a more modern-looking bubbling water feature, try using an urn that consists of metal. Alternatively, you could use a terracotta urn to promote a more rustic atmosphere.
- A half-barrel bubbling water feature can work well in spaces that have country or rustic themes. Unlike with bubbling urns, people do not usually cover half-barrel bubblers with grilles. Instead, they leave the water reservoirs exposed or fill them with plants. As Practical Water Garden Solutions mentions, some common plant options for half-barrel bubblers include water lilies, water lettuce, reeds and cattails. While a full-size barrel could also function as a water feature, half-barrels are more compact and require less water. Wooden whiskey half-barrels are popular options; and provide warm, textural surfaces that "colder" metal or terracotta urns cannot match.
- According to the gardening blog Country Gardener, a bubbling boulder consists of a large stone or rock that rests atop a water-reservoir basin and pump. A long hole that is drilled through the boulder provides space for a hose, which carries water from the basin to the top of the boulder. The water can then bubble out of the top of boulder, like a natural spring, and then stream down the sides of the boulder and back into the basin.
- A bubble wall is one of the most modern types of bubbling water features. The wall consists of transparent or semi-transparent panels of material, such as glass or plastic, which hold a reservoir of water. Multiple jets at the bottom of the water feature produce bubbles, which flow up the wall in straight or sometimes curving lines. While a bubble wall works well as a stand-alone water feature, you can also add a bubble wall to aquariums or fish tanks.
