How to Paint the Coping on Swimming Pools

    • 1). Lightly sand the coping to remove any loose paint and to sand down any rough edges. This will also help the new paint to stick.

    • 2). Clean the coping with a wet sponge or sponge mop to remove any dust or dirt. Allow the coping to dry overnight before applying paint.

    • 3). Use masking tape to apply strips of newspaper to the inside of the pool to protect the liner. Tape the newspaper so that it is flush with the bottom of the coping. Do not let the newspaper get wet. Drain some of the water out of the pool if necessary. Use duct tape to secure the newspaper to the concrete on the outside of the pool up to the edge of the coping.

    • 4). Spray the coping with an epoxy spray paint that is made for metal. Hold the can at least 10 inches away to prevent the paint from running. You may also apply the paint with a small roller.

    • 5). Let the paint dry overnight. Remove all of the tape and newspaper.

    • 6). Wait at least another 24 hours before using the pool or refilling the water.
