How to Clean Ceramic Grout
- 1). Sweep the tiles and grout to loosen and remove surface dust. You should do this regularly to maintain your grout and prevent dirt from setting into the soft surface, but if you find yourself faced with an immediate mess, make sure to begin the cleaning process right away. The longer you wait, the more difficult your job will be.
- 2). Roll a wet dry vacuum over the grout to penetrate the grout with clean water and remove dirt from beneath the surface, in areas usually not accessible during cleaning. You can rent a wet dry vacuum from many home improvement stores if you do not have one available.
- 3). Pour 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 7 cups of water (preferably distilled) into a spray bottle and shake until the solution becomes thoroughly mixed. Pay close attention to your measurements, as too much ammonia can discolor your tiles and grout.
- 4). Spray your grout with your liquid solution and wipe firmly with a sponge or soft cloth. You may also use a toothbrush to remove set-in stains. Just make sure not to use scouring pads or other abrasive products, as these can scratch your tile and destroy the sealant on your grout.
- 5). Remove mold and mildew from grout by mixing one part liquid chlorine bleach with five parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the affected grout and wipe with a soft cloth or sponge. Dry the area completely, as mold spores breed in wet environments.
