Qi-Gong For Reduction of Anxiety

Qi-gong, which is pronounced chee-gung, is a combination of two words that mean: • Qi: air, breath, life energy • Gong: work Thus the meaning of Qi-gong is "working the life energy".
The practice of Qi-gong involves gentle movements of the body, visualization and breathing to work (gong) the life energy (qi) within the body.
It originated in China and it is practiced by the tens of millions of people around the world to improve physical and mental health.
Qi-gong is taught in major Chinese universities and it is used in Chinese hospitals as an officially recognized medical procedure.
Qi-gong contains exercises that benefit the body as a whole and also exercises that are focused on specific systems of the body.
It can help balance and restore the nervous, cardiovascular, lymphatic and digestive systems.
Besides their own personal benefit and self-healing, Qi-gong practitioners can also use it to cure other people.
According to Eastern philosophy emotional and physical problems are related to energy blockages in the body.
Base on this view, one of the main reasons why Qi-gong heals emotional and mental problems is because it unblocks and balances energy in the body.
Whether you believe or not in this theory, you can benefit from Qi-Gong.
Qi-gong can be practiced in the standing, sitting or supine (lying on the back) position.
This makes Qi-gong ideal for all ages.
One of the objectives during the practice of Qi-Gong is to achieve a quiet and calm state of mind.
This is done by concentrating on the breathing or on one point of the body.
The deeper this quiet state of mind is, the least you notice external stimuli (such as noise, temperature, light).
The mind and body turns into an ocean of tranquility and peace.
Most people find it difficult to achieve this state, but with patience and perseverance it is possible to go deeper and deeper into it.
Like many things in life, Qi-gong should be practiced everyday for better results.
Most people practice Qi-Gong in the morning, before starting their daily activities.
This is a good idea, because your mind and body are more relaxed at this time, which makes it easier to concentrate on the exercise; the air is fresher and the Qi is best in this period of the day.
You can also practice Qi-Gong at other times of the day.
Ultimately it will depend on what time you feel it is better for you.
The practice can last from a few minutes (at least five) to an hour.
More than an hour is probably excessive.
Qi-gong is not intended to be a substitute to conventional medical treatment, but it can be used in combination with it.
When practicing Qi-gong, your mind gets focused, your breathing slows down, your body and mind relax.
These results by themselves help with reduction of anxiety.
Persistent practice of Qi-gong brings vitality and a calmer state of mind.
