How to Make Your House Shoes a Different Color
- 1). Put on a pair of rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes. Open the windows to circulate air.
- 2). Place a large metal pot with a lid on the stove and remove the lid. Combine your dye ingredients: 1 ounce aniline dye (for leather slippers) or 2 ounces all purpose dye (for wool or fabric slippers) to 2 cups of water. Sprinkle the aniline powder into the pot slowly. Bring the ingredients to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon of non-iodized salt to either mix to help with an even distribution of dye. Stir the mix with a plastic spoon.
- 3). Turn off the heat and allow the mix to cool before moving on. Move to Step 5 if you're working with leather slippers.
- 4). Add 1/3 cup white vinegar to the wool/water mix to perpetuate absorption of the dye. Submerge the wool slippers in the mix and cover the pot with the lid. Allow the slippers to sit for 30 minutes.
- 5). Place your slippers onto newspaper to prevent dripping. Coat your leather slippers with the dye using a sponge brush. Allow your slippers to air-dry for 24 hours before wearing.
