How to Close an Inground Pool With a DE Filter

    • 1). Balance chemicals with appropriate rates for your pool so the pH is between 7.2 and 7.6, calcium hardness is 180 to 220 ppm and alkalinity is between 80 and 120 ppm.

    • 2). Shock the pool according to directions on the chosen shock product label.

    • 3). Remove skimmer basket and other seasonal items and accessories from the pool.

    • 4). Skim, sweep and vacuum the pool.

    • 5). Set the DE filter tank to "Backwash" to remove as much DE from the tank as possible.

    • 6). Release pressure in the tank by opening the pressure relief valve that is usually located on top of the tank near the pressure gauge.

    • 7). Remove the band that secures the tank cover to the tank, and remove the lid.

    • 8). Drain the water from the tank by opening the water outlet on the bottom of the tank.

    • 9). Unscrew the nut that holds the flange or rod assembly in the tank, and remove the assembly from the tank.

    • 10

Use a hose to clean all the remaining DE from the tank, rods or flanges and inside of the lid. Be careful not to bend the flanges while moving the assembly around to clean off the DE.

    • 11

Place the rod or flange assembly back into the tank, and secure with the nut. Place the lid back on the tank and secure according to the methods required for the specific type of DE tank.

    • 12

Drain the water below the skimmer basket and water inlet valve.

    • 13

Open the bottom drains on all accessory equipment, such as chlorinators and heaters.

    • 14

Use a compressor or shop vacuum with the hose on the exhaust outlet to blow the water from the skimmer, water inlet and accessory lines. Hold a wet cloth around the hose, and push tightly into the opening. Hold in position while operating to be sure all of the water has been blown from the lines.

    • 15

Remove ladders from the inground pool. Cover with the chosen winter cover system.
