Rubber Roof Treatment for an RV
- Most RVs are made with rubber roofs. To clean these roofs, you must use Ethylene Propyline Diene Monomer, which is made especially for rubber roofs. The chemical makeup of rubber makes it difficult to clean because certain cleansers can penetrate through the material creating holes or damage caulking. It is important to remember to clean the roof of your RV. This area is often forgotten about; however, it is the most important area to clean because there are harmful materials in the air and nature that can cause dangerous buildup on the roof.
- The most important thing to remember as with anything else is safety first. Be extremely careful when working on the roof. You could be seriously injured from a fall. Regardless of the roof's structure, you must walk lightly and as far from the edge as possible.
Rubber roofs should be inspected several times a year. Depending on where you park it, it could need an inspection more often. Never use any products on your roof that contain petroleum solvents, harsh abrasives or citrus ingredients. These products can cause permanent damage to the roof. For light cleaning, you can use warm water and a mild detergent (such as Dawn or Ivory). - For more difficult cleaning and to condition or protect the roof, there are commercial cleaning products designed just for RV roofs. Some stains may require a second washing. Always rinse the sides, front and back of your RV before and after rinsing the roof to prevent cleaners from streaking the finish on the sidewalls. Every time you're up on the roof, inspect the sealants around all the openings and seams on the roof. A properly maintained rubber roof will last for years.
