How to Start a Murray 17-hp 42-Inch Lawn Mower

    • 1). Add unleaded gasoline to the fuel tank of the mower. Check the oil level by removing the dipstick from the oil fill tube. Add SAE30 motor oil, if necessary, to raise the oil level to the recommended operating level.

    • 2). Sit in the operator's seat of the Murray mower.

    • 3). Place your foot on the combination brake and clutch of the mower, push forward and lock the parking brake into place to prevent the mower from moving while starting.

    • 4). Place the transmission in the "neutral" position by moving the gearshift lever. Disengage the blades of the Murray mower with the attachment clutch.

    • 5). Position the choke in the "start" position. Insert the key into the starter and turn to start the mower. Release the key when the engine turns over and starts.
