DIY Mulching Blades
- 1). Park a riding mower on a flat surface and set the parking brake. Place the transmission in gear to prevent rolling during work and remove the key from the ignition.
- 2). Position a walk-behind mower on a level surface and remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Place a small container on the ground, remove the gas cap and pour the gasoline into the container to prevent accidental spilling.
- 3). Put on gloves to protect hands and place a block of wood on the inside of the mower deck. Turn the blade of the mower to wedge the wood in place and prevent the blade from turning.
- 4). Select a socket that fits the bolt holding the blade in place on the spindle of the mower. Connect the socket to a socket wrench and loosen the blade bolt. Turn the bolt to the left to loosen and remove it.
- 5). Pull the bolt, washer and blade from underneath the mower deck. Pay attention to the order in which the washers and blade are assembled on the bolt.
- 6). Assemble the washers and replacement mulching blade on the bolt. Finger-tighten the bolt with the blade assembly into the spindle. Tighten the bolt in place with the socket wrench. Use the block of wood to hold the blade in place while tightening.
- 7). Repeat the process to remove additional blades from beneath a riding mower and replace them with suitable mulching blades.
- 8). Add the fuel back to the walk-behind mower and connect the spark plug wire back to the spark plug.
