  The new software now available for iPhone and iPod Touch 2G devices is known as iOS 4.0. The new iOS 4.0 offers a multitude of new features, including multitasking, folders, Perisistent Wi-Fi, iBooks and wallpapers. The new software upgrade is available to existing customers at no extra charge, and adds a new level of functionality to current hardware models. Multitasking

  The new multitasking feature offered in iOS 4.0 allows certain applications to leave pertinent resources running in the background while the user switches quickly from application to application. The type of resource that each app can continue to run in the background is decided by Apple, in order to provide the user a more pleasant experience without sacrificing too much battery life.
  
  

Folders

  iOS 4.0 offers folders for organizing and creating your own personal directories. This feature allows users to personalize the name of the folders and decide the contents of each folder. Applications can be "dragged and dropped" into the created directory folders. The folders feature allows users to install up to 2,160 applications, compared to the 180 applications for which the previous OS allowed.
  
  

Persistent Wi-Fi

• Persistent Wi-Fi is another feature offered in the iOS 4.0 software. This allows you to receive and transfer data via Wi-Fi, even when the device is in standby mode with the screen asleep. This is very convenient if you need to download large files or multiple files over a Wi-Fi network and you don't want to run your battery down by keeping your device awake with the screen's backlight on. Before this feature was introduced, the device would simply drop the Wi-Fi connection when the device was switched into standby mode, either by the user or from non-use.
  
  

iBooks

This feature was first available to users who modified their software through a method known as "jailbreaking," but it's not just for those users anymore. The ability to add wallpaper adds a new level of customization to the user experience.
