How to Gut & Upgrade an iMac Bondi

    • 1). Put the soft cloth on a table. Put the iMac onto the soft cloth face down.

    • 2). Insert the plastic knife into the plastic top panel to release it. Remove the plastic top panel. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws near the flip foot.

    • 3). Pull off the video-out access door. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws at the sides of the video-out access door.

    • 4). Pull the plastic bottom housing off of the front of the iMac.

    • 5). Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the six screws now revealed on the plastic plate. Lift the plastic plate off of the iMac.

    • 6). Push down on the plastic tabs at the side of the two memory chips to release them. Pull the memory chips out and discard them.

    • 7). Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws from around the CD/hard drive carrier. Use your fingers to disconnect all of the cables from the back of the carrier. Tilt the carrier up and lift it out of the iMac.

    • 8). Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from around the carrier. Turn the carrier over and lift the metal plate off of the carrier.

    • 9). Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws from around the hard drive. Lift the hard drive off of the carrier. Remove the screws from the adapter board at the back of the hard drive drive using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Discard the hard drive. Screw the adapter board to the back of the replacement hard drive. Attach the replacement hard drive to the carrier.

      Unscrew the CD drive from the carrier using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the CD drive and remove it from the carrier. Discard the CD drive. Put the DVD drive in place of the CD drive in the carrier. Attach the DVD drive to the carrier.

      Attach the cables from the iMac to the back of the carrier. Put the carrier back into position in the iMac. Reattach the screws.

      Reassemble the iMac. Open the memory compartment at the back with the flat-edged screwdriver. Pull the access panel down. Insert the two replacement memory chips.

      Remove the Airport card that is below the memory chips by pulling it straight out. Remove the antenna connector on the side of the Airport card. Attach the antenna to the replacement Airport card. Put the replacement Airport card into the slot the other was taken out of.

      Close the access panel. Use the flat-edged screwdriver to secure the access panel closed.

      Eject the disc tray of the DVD drive and insert a Mac OS X installation disc. Close the disc tray and turn on the computer. Install the Mac OS X operating system.
