How to Build a Potting Bench on Wheels

    • 1). Cut the lumber into 14 lengths at 46-inches; six lengths at 22 1/2-inches; four lengths of 24-inches; two at 33 1/4-inches; two at 31 1/4-inches and one piece of 18-inches. Cut the 18-inch piece in half lengthwise so there are two pieces 18-by-2-inches.

    • 2). Assemble two 46 and two 24-inch pieces into a rectangular frame; the ends of the 46-inch pieces should abut the inside edge of the 24-inch pieces to form right angles. Drill pilot holes every six inches along the joints then screw the frame together. Repeat so you have two identical frames.

    • 3). Slot three of the 22 1/2-inch planks in between the long sides of a frame, evenly spaced. Drill two pilot holes through the side of the frame into the abutting ends of each 22 1/2-inch support plank. Repeat with other frame and remaining 22 1/2-inch planks.

    • 4). Take five of the remaining 46-inch planks and evenly space them across the top of one of the frames to form the slatted potting bench top. The outer slats should be flush with the side of the frames. Drill a pilot hole through each slat and each support plank underneath it; five holes per slat. Screw together then repeat with remaining 46-inch planks and the other frame.

    • 5). Position the frame you choose for the top of the bench on a 46-inch side. Position the other frame on its side, slats facing in the opposite direction, forming a tray for the bottom. The frames should be around 30-inches away from each other.

    • 6). Place a 33 1/4-inch leg plank between the two frames; flush with the edges of the frame and the top of the leg flush with the top frame. The bottom frame should be 2-inches in from the bottom of the leg. Drill four pilot holes through the leg into each frame side in a square. Screw together.

    • 7). Place the 31 1/4-inch leg plank on the other end of the frames. This leg will be flush with the sides and the ends of both frames. Screw together as you did the first legs. Turn the frames over and repeat on the other side with the remaining leg planks.

    • 8). Turn the potting bench upright, it will have a slight lean forward at this point. Drill a 1/2-inch hole, 2-inches up from the bottom of the shorter leg, on both sides. Thread the steel rod through then attach the wheels to the rod.

    • 9). Position the two 18-by-2-inch handles on either side of the top of the potting bench, on the opposite end to the wheels. There should be 12-inches jutting past the end of the frame for the handles. Screw in place to finish the portable potting bench.
