How to Sew a Child's Princess Costume

    • 1). Purchase your choice of princess costume sewing pattern. There are a variety of styles for sale in fabric stores based on storybook characters. Also purchase the quantities of fabrics, notions and trims noted on the package. Search for fancy satin ribbons, embroidered trims and lace accents for a fantasy princess look.

    • 2). Cut all paper pattern pieces to be used from the pattern package using the household scissors. Costume patterns may include more than one costume, so only cut the pieces needed for your selection.

    • 3). Pin paper pattern pieces to the fabric along the edges, laying them out according to the pattern's directions.

    • 4). Cut out all the pieces with the fabric scissors.

    • 5). Remove the paper patterns from each piece as you are ready to sew it. Follow the pattern assembly directions to sew the garment together.

    • 6). Sew flowers, ribbons and trims by hand to adorn the dress, following the pictures on the pattern as a guide. Get creative and apply your own embellishments, and let your child help to decide on the placement of the adornments.
