How to Remove Vomit Odors
- 1). Clean up the vomit as soon as possible. Use paper towels and dispose of them in a plastic bag outside of your home.
- 2). Open up the windows to start getting fresh air to circulate around the home, forcing the vomit odor out.
- 3). Launder affected fabrics immediately after pretreating it with a stain remover. Use the hottest water the fabric can tolerate. Add a cup of baking soda to the wash and a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to effectively kill any lingering odor.
- 4). Treat stains on upholstery with a solution of 2 tbsp. chlorine bleach in a quart of warm water. This also helps to disinfect the area. For colored textiles, use a color-safe bleach to avoid fading.
- 5). Disinfect hard surfaces with the bleach solution and allow it to soak for a five to 10 minutes before wiping it dry.
- 6). Cover affected upholstered areas, such as furniture and carpet, with baking soda. Not only will this draw the moisture out of the upholstery, but the lingering odor as well. Leave the baking soda for at least four hours and vacuum it up.
- 7). Add a new smell to the room by using air fresheners, reed diffusers or scented candles.
