How to Set Prong Semi-Mounts for Jewelry
- 1). Clean your gemstone carefully to remove any traces of dirt or oils. Lift the stone into the setting, using tweezers.
- 2). Open the gem-setting pliers. Adjust them so that one jaw is pressing against the top of a prong, with the other jaw resting lightly against the length of the opposite prong. Avoid putting the jaw on the top of the second prong, as you want to tighten just one prong at a time.
- 3). Press the top of the first prong against the stone, using gentle pressure.
- 4). Turn the setting and repeat on the opposite side, until all the prongs have been pressed flush against the stone.
- 5). Check to make sure the stone is securely held in the prongs. Polish with a jewelry cloth before wearing.
