How to Make a Computer From a Server

    • 1). Decide on an operating system that works best for you. Your simplest choice is a Windows operating system. You can install one of the versions of Windows 7, such as Home Premium or even Windows Vista. Buy the operating system from a computer retailer.

    • 2). Install the operating system. Put the CD or DVD in the CD or DVD drive and restart the computer. When the computer starts, you will see an on-screen prompt of which key to hit to enter the BIOS. Hit the appropriate key and scroll through the menus until you see "Boot Options." Choose to make the optical drive--the CD or DVD drive--the first boot device.

    • 3). Restart the computer. Follow the menus to install the new operating system. It will ask you to click to accept the license agreement. It will ask you where to install--choose the hard drive and then choose the option to format the hard drive. Finish installing by following the directions and choosing your time zone and other options. When prompted, enter the serial number for the operating system. Restart the computer when you are done.
