Correct Way to Plant a Cutting From a Plumeria

    Size

    • An ideal plumeria cutting size is between 12 and 18 inches in length, according to Milt Pierson of the American Plumeria Society. A stem that has a bit of grayish, slightly thicker wood is appropriate.

    Timing

    • Any time of year is OK for cuttings. Faster and lusher root growth occurs if done from spring to early summer. This allows the most seasonal heat to encourage root and leaf development.

    Expert Insight

    • The cutting should be allowed to air-dry in a warm, dry location for a minimum of three days---ideally seven--- according to Pierson. Cuttings require a warm, moist, fast-draining soil mix of sand and compost watered sparingly. Roots begin to sprout in six to eight weeks.
