Most Common Safety Issues in the Art Field

    Art Materials

    • Many art materials are made of or are used in conjunction with toxic chemicals. Paint thinner and turpentine, often used with oil painting, emit vapors that can be unsafe to breathe in an enclosed space. Clear acrylic sealers should be used outside if possible because the fumes from the spray are very toxic. Drawing markers are another source of dangerous fumes.

    Personal Safety

    Equipment

    • Welding tools, a table saw, carving knives and chisels are a few examples of the many tools that artists use in their work. Before using any special equipment, the artist should wear proper safety clothing and be knowledgeable in proper use of the equipment. Tools also must be in good condition. Dull wood carving knives can cause a cut much easier than sharp knives.

    Expert Insight

    • Taking classes in pottery, painting, drawing or sculpture at a local college or community center is a smart way to learn safety procedures. These classes will have woven into them tips, techniques and facts about equipment, chemicals and related issues. You will also learn how to properly store chemicals and other supplies that be dangerous.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Wear proper safety equipment and use materials and tools properly. Gloves, masks, eye protections and other gear reduce the risk of accidents. Artists should also be knowledgeable about the equipment they use, their proper maintenance and where to find training to increase their knowledge. Staying alert while working also can reduce risks.
