How to Make Bunk Bed Sheets

Measuring the Bed and Fabric Choice

    • 1). Using a measuring tape or tape measure, write down the length (L), width (W) and depth (D) of the mattress. The length of fabric you'll need for a fitted sheet is the length + (depth x 2) + 16 inches. The width of fabric you'll need is the width + (depth x 2) + 16 inches.

    • 2). Take your calculations with you to the fabric store to find the right size material for your bedding project. Look for material that is sturdy, that has an even weave and that will hold up to repeated washings.

    • 3). Purchase matching thread and about 1 1/2 meters of thin elastic, for the bottom sheet.

    Sewing

    • 1). For the top sheet, simply mark and sew a narrow hem around the long ends of the fabric. At the top and bottom, sew a 3-inch hem. This will allow the sheet to be "reversible"---either end can be used at the head of the bed, offering longer wear.

    • 2). For the fitted sheet, in each corner, measure the depth + 8 inches and mark. Measure the same amount at right angles so that the lines form a square. Do this in each corner, and cut out the squares, leaving about a half-inch for seams.

    • 3). Pin and sew the cut edges together, preferably with a zigzag stitch.

    • 4). Now turn the fabric so it is wrong side up and pin a double hem of a half-inch all around the sheet.
Measure 8 inches along each side from the corners and mark with your fabric pencil. Sew the half-inch hem, being careful to leave a 1-inch gap where the marks are.

    • 5). Push the elastic through one of these holes, threading it around the corner and out through the following hole. Pull on the elastic to gather. Secure the ends of the elastic and sew down to close the gaps in the hem. Do this for all four sides. Trim any excess elastic, cut loose threads and your sheet is ready.
