How to Decorate With a Paint Mural

    • 1). Find an image for your mural using photographs, books, art magazines or the Internet. Alternatively, use a selection of images to create a collage for your mural. Or try painting a study of a chosen subject if you are artistically inclined.

    • 2). Rule a square grid onto your image using a pencil and ruler. Then rule another square grid onto your prepared wall using a meter rule. Ensure the horizontal and vertical lines are straight and an equal distance apart to form equal squares. The wall grid should contain the same number of squares as in the reference image.

    • 3). Observe your reference image, noticing where your reference points are against the wall grid, and start to draw the image onto your large grid. Draw one square at a time, always moving to the next adjacent square until you have completed the drawing.

    • 4). Decide in what style you want to paint your mural. For instance, do you want it to look like a classical painting like a Michelangelo? Or do you prefer to use a series of impressionistic dots, like the Impressionist Claude Monet? Or even to paint an abstract, using blocks of color like Piet Mondrian? You do not have to paint your mural how it appears in your reference image.

    • 5). Paint your mural with paints of your choice. Household paints and artist's acrylics are a good choice for interior wall murals. You can be experimental and use a combination of paint mediums or alternative materials, such as sand, fabrics or mosaic tiles, to create a mixed-media wall mural.
