How to Whitewash With Hydrated Lime Coatings

    • 1). Set out three buckets on a flat surface outside. Put 4 lbs. of salt in each of three buckets and 3 oz. of alum, which is just potash aluminum. Divide the quart of molasses between the three buckets.

    • 2). Pour 1/2 gallon of water into each bucket, and use a paint stirrer to mix the contents until they are completely incorporated. Cover the buckets. Put gloves, long sleeves and a dust mask on in preparation for mixing the hydrated lime.

    • 3). Set up the remaining two buckets, and pour 25 lbs. of lime into each. Slowly add 2 1/2 gallons of water, stirring as you do. Let the buckets sit overnight covered. You are making the hydrated lime.

    • 4). Remove the lids from the hydrated lime and stir. Uncover the other three buckets, and divide the hydrated lime evenly between the containers. Stir it in completely. The whitewash is now ready to use. Apply the whitewash as you would paint.

    • 5). Pour some of the white wash out into a paint pan, and apply it with a paintbrush. Let it dry 12 hours between coats. Stir the whitewash each time you use it to prevent separating.
