How to Set Up Clustered Virtual Servers

    Create the Private Virtual Network

    • 1). Click on "Start", "All Programs", "Microsoft Virtual Server", "Virtual Server Administration Website". A new window will pop up, titled "Master Status Page".

    • 2). Click on the "Create" button next to the "Virtual Networks". A new window titled "Virtual Network Properties" will appear on your screen.

    • 3). Input "Private" as the virtual network name. Select "None (Guests Only)" from the Network Adapter drop-down menu. Input "Private network for cluster communications (Heartbeat)" within the "Virtual Network Notes:" text field. Click on the "OK" button to create the private network.

    Create the Public Virtual Network

    • 1). Open the "Master Status Page" from your Windows Start Menu.

    • 2). Click the "Create Button" in the Master Status Page interface to open the Virtual Network Properties page.

    • 3). Input "Public" as the virtual network name. Select an available network adapter setting from the drop-down menu. Typically, select the "LAN" or "WIP" setting. Depending on your network setup, one of these two options will be available.

    • 4). Input "Public network for cluster communications" into the text field titled "Virtual Network Notes". Click the "OK" button to confirm the network creation.

    Create and Configure the Virtual Hard Disk

    • 1). Open your Windows Explorer file browser and navigate to the "C:\" directory on your host server.

    • 2). Right-click any blank space in the file browser and click "New" and "Folder" from the right-click menu. Name this folder "VirtualDisks" and press "Enter" to confirm the folder creation.

    • 3). Right-click any blank space in the file browser and click "New" and "Folder" from the right-click menu. Name this folder "VirtualConfigs" and press "Enter" to confirm the folder creation.

    • 4). Open the "Master Status Page" from the Windows Start Menu by clicking "Start", "All Programs" and "Microsoft Virtual Server".

    • 5). Click on "Virtual Server", "Server Properties" and then "Search Paths" from the Master Status Page menus.

    • 6). Input "C:\VirtualConfigs" in the "Default virtual machine configuration folder:" text-field. Input "C:\VirtualDisks" in the "Search paths:" text-field. Click the "OK" button to confirm the changes to the server properties.

    Create the Clustered Server Disk

    • 1). Open the "Master Status Page" from the Windows Start Menu by clicking "Start", "All Programs" and "Windows Virtual Server".

    • 2). Click on the "Virtual Disks" menu in the Master Status Page. Create a "Fixed Size Virtual Hard Disk" from the create drop-down menu and button.

    • 3). Input "C:\VirtualDisks\Quorum.vhd" as the "Virtual Hard Disk File Name:" and create a 500 MB capacity virtual disk by typing "500" for the size and selecting "MB" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Create" button to create the virtual cluster hard disk.

    Create a Virtual Hard Disk as a Parent to the Server Disk

    • 1). Open the "Master Status Page" from the Windows Start Menu by clicking "Start", "All Programs" and "Microsoft Virtual Server".

    • 2). Click on the "Virtual Disks" menu in the Master Status Page. Click on the "Create" button and select "Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk" from the drop-down menu.

    • 3). Input "C:\VirtualDisks\ParentVM.vhd" as the virtual hard disk file name in the text field. Leave the default value of 16 GB for the storage size of the virtual disk and click the "Create" button.

    Create the Virtual Machine

    • 1). Open the "Master Status Page" from the Windows Start Menu by clicking "Start", "All Programs" and "Microsoft Virtual Server".

    • 2). Click the "Virtual Machines" menu from the Master Status Page. Click on the "Create Button" in the Virtual Machines menu to create your clustered virtual machine.

    • 3). Input "C:\VirtualConfig\ParentVM.vmc" in the "Virtual Machine Name" text field. Set your virtual machine's memory to 256 MB by inputting the value into the "Virtual Disk Memory" text field.

    • 4). Check the option "Use an existing hard disk" from the Virtual Machine menu and input "C:\VirtualDisks\ParentVM.vhd" under the "File name (.vhd)" text field. Select "Public" from the "Connected To:" drop-down menu and then click the "Create" button to create your virtual clustered machine.
