The Best Way to Re-Sod a Yard
- 1). Dig up any remaining dead sod patches with a shovel. Till the entire yard with a garden tiller to turn any sod you missed into the soil. Rake the soil so the surface is even.
- 2). Water the soil until it is moist. Unroll the first roll of sod over the newly bare soil, starting at the top of the yard. Lay the first roll perpendicular to the yard's slope, and flush against a straight edge like the house.
- 3). Butt the next piece of sod against the first tightly, leaving no gaps. Continue until the first row is complete.
- 4). Unroll the second roll of sod, laying it right up against the first row. If the sod lengths are all the same, cut the roll in half before you lay it so the seams between rolls are staggered.
- 5). Continue laying rows of sod, butted up against each other. Alternate using whole rows with cut rows so the seams are staggered. Cover the entire yard.
- 6). Pass over the sod with a garden roller. Water the sod within 30 minutes of laying it. Continue watering frequently enough to keep the sod moist for the first two weeks.
- 7). Stop watering for one day, then mow the grass to your desired height.
