Types of Deck Stains
- While transparent stain can look quite beautiful, it is one of the stains that lasts the shortest amount of time. The transparency of the stain allows the grain of the wood to show through. The problem with transparent deck stain is that it does not last effectively beyond a year.
- The semi-transparent nature of this stain allows some of the grain of the wood to show through while possessing some color tint of its own. Applying two coats will help make this stain more effective. However, while this stain will last longer than the transparent stain, it will last only about two years.
- Semi-solid stains, by their nature, possess more solidity of color. This means that they are less transparent, and do not reveal as much of the grain of the wood beneath. Two coats provide good protection. The pigment in the stain helps it to last up to four years.
- As the name implies, this stain has the most color, and because of this it offers the most protection. It doesn't allow as much of the wood's grain to show through. Two coats provide excellent protection and it can last last more than four years.
- Generally speaking, it's a good idea to add a new layer of stain every two years. According to the length of time the stain is supposed to last, it is a good idea to strip the deck down to the wood and reapply new coats. Try not to drag furniture on the deck to prevent it from scratching the stain. Sweep the deck often to clean it.
