How to Make a Detachable Pocket
- 1). Fold the fabric longways with the printed sides together, if applicable. Pin it along the edges to make a rectangle of double-thick fabric. Sew 1/8 inch in from the edge. Leave a 2-inch to 3-inch gap so that you can turn the fabric right-side out.
- 2). Turn the fabric right-side out and push out the corners until they are flat. Stitch closed the gap.
- 3). Fold 6 inches of the fabric vertically, creating the pocket. Sew a seam 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch from the edge on both sides. Turn the pocket inside out so the seam does not show. Fold down the top 2-inch section for a flap and pin down the flap.
- 4). Cut a 4-inch section from an old necktie. Fold under 1/2 inch on each end and hem these rough edges with a simple stitch across the tie. Stitch the piece to the back of the pocket approximately 1 inch from the top. Sew a row of stitches through the top hem and another across the bottom hem to secure it.
- 5). Flip over the pocket and mark where the button and button hole should go on the flap. It should be centered and approximately 1 inch from the bottom of the flap. Sew the button to the pocket. Sew a rectangle around the space where the button hole will be, using a zigzag stitch. Cut the button hole.
- 6). Slip your belt through the loop on the back.
