How to Cover the Wallboard Above a Shower Surround

    • 1). Spread the tarp beneath your work area. Make sure the drywall is securely in place by pressing it with your hand. Secure it if it moves by driving new wallboard screws next to the existing screws. Squeeze a dollop of caulk onto the new and old nail heads and wipe away the excess caulk with your finger. Sand any rough patches with medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 2). Apply a strip of painter's tape around the wall where the wall meets the ceiling to prevent the ceiling paint from getting on the wall. Wipe the ceiling with a damp sponge and allow the ceiling to dry before proceeding.

    • 3). Open and stir the primer for a few seconds before pouring it into the paint tray.

    • 4). Dip the roller into the paint tray to cover it with primer. Remove excess primer by rolling it back and forth in the tray; the roller should be completely covered with primer, but not so much that it drips.

    • 5). Cover the ceiling with an even coat of primer by moving the roller back and forth. Work from right to left if you are right-handed and from left to right if you are left-handed. Let the primer coat dry. Dry times vary based on room temperature and manufacturer, so follow the recommendations on the label and check the ceiling every 30 minutes or so. Pour the unused primer back into the bucket and rinse the tray with water.

    • 6). Open and stir the ceiling paint. Pour the paint into the well end of the tray, dip the roller in the paint and remove the excess paint by rolling it back and forth along the tray. The roller should be completely covered with paint, but not so much that it drips.

    • 7). Glide the paint roller back and forth across the ceiling until it is covered with an even coat of paint. Use the paintbrush to touch up the corners that you couldn't reach with the roller. Pull off the painter's tape after the paint has dried.
