Video: How to Tell When Carrots Are Finished Growing

Video Transcript

Hi, I¡¯m Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson, at TecaThompson.com. And today, we¡¯re talking about how to tell when your carrots are finished growing. So, carrots take about 50 to 80 days to mature, but they¡¯re edible at any stage. So, the best thing to do as far as the 50 to 80 days goes is keep a grow log when you planted them, and then you¡¯ll be able to chart what level of maturity they are when you go to harvest. So, how to tell visually is if you brush back the dirt at the base of the carrot where it¡¯s growing, you¡¯re going to look for about three-quarters to an inch at the base of the carrot right there, if you can see that. And then, if you also want to, you can dig ¨C you can trowel down on the root of the carrot. Usually, the thickest part is on top, so you¡¯re safe. And, you just stick your trowel down, and you can see how large it is going down. You can also test them if you like by pulling a few from the ground. Make sure to moisten the soil first ¨C that way, you¡¯ll have an easier time. And, as you can see, this is large and mature. And so, that¡¯s some ways to tell if your carrot is ripe. Pretty simple ways, but they¡¯re edible at any stage. So, you can pick them and eat them whenever you like. I¡¯m Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson, at TecaThompson.com. Thank you for watching.
