How to Keep Wood Floors Cleaned

    • 1). Place rugs and floor mats at the entryways. These will help to catch dirt and other debris that can dirty the floor and cause damage. Shake out the rugs and mats daily. Use mats and rugs especially designed for hardwood floors. Mats that are non-ventilated or have rubber backing can damage the wood floor.

    • 2). Sweep or dust mop the floor daily to remove loose dust, dirt and other particles. If you have a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment, use it to sweep the floor and get into hard-to-reach crevices.

    • 3). Damp mop your wood floor weekly. Use a mop that is slightly damp. Avoid using excessive amounts of water, as this can damage or warp the wood. Dry the floor thoroughly with a soft cloth right after mopping.

    • 4). Clean your floor periodically with a hardwood floor cleaner and a soft cloth or mop. Check with the manufacturer of your hardwood floor for specific products that are recommended for cleaning your floor. In some cases, failure to use the manufacturer-recommended cleaning products can result in a void in your warranty.

    • 5). Have your floors refinished per the manufacturer's time frame. This will vary, depending on how well your floors are cared for, as well as they type of finish. In general, hardwood floors should be refinished every five to seven years, but check with your flooring manufacturer for specific refinishing details. The finish on your floor helps keep it clean and stain free.
