Varieties of Flowering Sugar Cane

    Saccharum arundinaceum: Hardy Sugar Cane

    • This hardy sugarcane is one of the few that withstands cooler climates. Growing 10 to 15 feet tall, this species of sugarcane has the typical strong, green stalks and blooms with pink to silver blossoms in the fall.

    Saccharum officinarum: Sugar Cane

    • Also known as Noble Cane, this species of flowering sugar cane produces a thick, very juicy stalk that is the main component in the production of sugar and sugar products. Growing 10 to 15 feet high, this species produces a 3-inch spikelet flower covered in silky hairs.

    Saccharum Barberi: Indian Cane Flower

    • This species of flowering sugar cane produces shorter stalks and does not yield well for true sugar production. Instead, its cane is used to produce cane wax, molasses, and as a fodder for livestock. It produces small, white flowers that are feather-like in appearance.

    Saccharum Spontaneum

    • This flowering species of sugarcane is considered a spreading grass or weed-like. Not used for sugar production, this species is highly disease-resistant and can grow up to 18 feet tall. Flowers produced are violet to purple and covered in silky hairs. It flowers between October and February, and is often planted to avoid soil erosion.
