How to Become Better at Marching

    • 1). Treat your marching practice the way an athlete would treat a sport: that is, nourish your body well before each rehearsal and performance since marching can be physically grueling. Getting better will require that you are fit.

    • 2). Focus on looking good first before playing an instrument if that is part of your role. Make sure you are in the proper line, your stance is correct and you know where you are headed next. To get better at this, study your dot book or formation guide ahead of time so you can go into rehearsal with more confidence.

    • 3). Choose a marching buddy on your team who will critique your marching skills. This should be someone with slightly more experience who will be willing to break down complicated sets and help you learn them step by step. It should be someone whose guidance you trust.

    • 4). Form good habits during rehearsal. It's true that you will perform the way that you practice. So instead of using rehearsal as down time, give it your full energy and attention. You'll find that the performance piece comes much easier when it's time to put on a show.
