How to Build a Brick Above Ground Garden Pond
- 1). Mark out the area you would like your pond to be situated using a can of spray paint or by wrapping a garden hose around. Work out roughly how many bricks you will need to outline the shape you have created. You will need at least two layers of bricks, possibly three, depending on the size of the bricks you are using. The pond should ideally be at least 3 feet deep.
- 2). Place a layer of bricks to create the outline of the pond. Then pile another layer of bricks on top of this. When piling the bricks on top of each other, make sure they are do not have their ends lined up but are instead "offset". Keep piling on the bricks until you have acquired the height of pond you are looking for.
- 3). Cover the inside of the pond with roofing felt. Be generous with the roofing felt and lay it so there is plenty of overlap and it hangs around the sides of the pond.
- 4). Put an EPDM liner over the top of the roofing liner. This is the most commonly used type of pond liner and ideal for man-made ponds. Make sure the liner is big enough to cover the inside of the pond as well as spill over the top of the bricks and hang down to the ground all the way around. This will make it waterproof.
- 5). Fill the pond with water.
- 6). Layer flat veneer rocks against the outside of the bricks to hide them. Use larger rocks on the bottom and smaller ones on top. Once you have covered the walls, add a layer on top of the liner. Make sure it overhangs the bricks so the liner is completely hidden.
