How to To Compost Leaves In Your Backyard

    • 1). Shred the leaves by going over them with a lawn mower or by using a leaf shredder or chipper that shreds leaves. Leaves that are adequately shredded ensure proper aeration.

    • 2). Place the shredded leaves in an area you have designated for composting. You can use a compost bin or an area enclosed by wooden or wire fencing. The site should drain well and not contain any standing water.

    • 3). Construct a leaf pile that is about 3 feet high and 4 feet in diameter.

    • 4). Spray water over the leaves as you create the pile. Water is required to help microorganisms do their job. Saturate the leaves until you can squeeze droplets from a handful of leaves.

    • 5). Turn the pile with a shovel or pitchfork once a month during warmer weather and less frequently during colder weather, such as once every two months. Frequent turning during colder weather allows too much heat to escape. The pile should feel hot in its center a few weeks after starting it and will shrink as it decomposes.

    • 6). Add a nitrogen source to speed up decomposition if desired. Leaves lack nitrogen and decompose at a slow rate. Nitrogen-boosting options include grass clippings, manure, dried blood and bone meal. However, the leaves have the winter to decompose, often rendering nitrogen additions unnecessary. In addition, putting too much grass in the pile can interfere with oxygen levels, which can lead to odors.
